Vuelta a España, Stage 17: Missed The Move

11. September 2013

No one from the BMC Racing Team made the decisive split near the end of Wednesday's stage of the Vuelta a España that ended with a small group sprint at the end of the 189-kilometer race.

Crosswinds Split The Peloton
While two riders spent more than 160 kilometers on the front after breaking away at the start, the real action occurred about 30 kilometers from the finish after the day's final categorized climb. Strong winds which had threatened to split the peloton earlier in the day finally did their damage. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Yvon Ledanois said after having a rider in nearly every breakaway the past two weeks, a move went up the road without one. "It was a bit of a bad day for the team because we didn't get anyone in that front group," he said. "It's not normal, but it's the race. I think we'll have a good reaction tomorrow and in the next days. The guys will recover." Bauke Mollema (Belkin Pro Cycling) won out of the 34-rider group that finished 91 seconds ahead of a chasing bunch that included four of the six BMC Racing Team riders remaining in the race. Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team) kept the overall lead.
