Mathias Frank and Manuel Quinziato figured prominently in Wednesday's breakaway at the Vuelta a España, with Frank eventually riding to fourth place, the BMC Racing Team's best performance of the race to date.

Bridged The Gap

BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said Frank rode impressively to bridge a two-minute gap with two others and reach Quinziato's breakaway group, which numbered 15. Working together, the 18 gained a maximum lead of more than eight minutes before splintering on the final climb that stretched for nearly 30 kilometers. As David Moncoutie (Cofidis, Le Credit En Ligne), was soloing to the stage win in the 167 km race, Frank was chasing in a select group. "Mathias was always moving in good position, making the final group of five," Lelangue said. "To finish on this level, in a big mountain stage at the Vuelta is a really, really good performance for Mathias." Bradley Wiggins (Sky Pro Cycling) leapfrogged teammate and previous race leader Christopher Froome to don the red jersey.
