Taylor Phinney shook off a mid-race crash to ride to his second straight top 10 finish for the BMC Racing Team Tuesday at the Amgen Tour of California.

Uphill Finish Wednesday

The U.S. national time trial champion avoided two crashes in the final kilometer and sprinted to eighth place as Greg Henderson (Sky Procycling) took the win and gained the overall lead. Phinney, who is eighth overall, said his crash wasn't serious. "I just ran into the ditch and flipped over. It was a soft crash," he said. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Michael Sayers said the first decisive moment of the race comes on the final climb up Sierra Road Wednesday in San Jose. "If you want to be a contender for the overall, you have to be in the first group," Sayers said. "As a team, we need to have as many people in the first two groups."
