Tour de Wallonie, Stage 2: Van Avermaet In Yellow

24. July 2011

Houffalize, Belgium

BMC Racing Team's Greg Van Avermaet took the overall lead at the Tour de Wallonie Sunday thanks to second place on a stage that finished with the steep climb of the Mur Saint-Roch.

Terrific Leadout

After receiving an impressive leadout into the final corner from his teammtes, Van Avermaet stayed in the slipstream of Alessandro Ballan before going clear with the finish in sight. But on the steep climb he was unable to hold off Joost Vanleijen (Vacansoleil), who overtook him in the final 200 meters to get the victory. "I tried to win the stage by going early," Van Avermaet said. "The team did very good work to put me in the front and Ballan did a great job. We had a gap, but there was still 500 meters to go." BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said Taylor Phiney and Martin Kohler did a good job of keeping the field together in the final 10 kilometers of the 194-kilometer race.
