Tour de Pologne, Stage 1: Exciting Finish

1. August 2010

Warsaw, Poland

Alexander Kristoff finished seventh and Michael Schär figured in a long breakaway for the BMC Racing Team on the opening stage of the Tour de Pologne Sunday.

Schär Third Overall
Schär and three others enjoyed more than 150 kilometers of freedom and a maximum lead of five minutes before being brought back on the circuit finish in Warsaw. "I tried to take as many seconds in the intermediate sprints as possible," Schär said. "I won some sprints, but we knew that we were going to get caught because they didn't give us a lot of time." Schär's bonus time puts him third overall, five seconds behind stage winner Jacopo Guarnieri (Liquigas-Doimo).

Kristoff, Ballan Avoid Crash
Kristoff and defending Tour de Pologne champion Alessandro Ballan were the only two riders from the BMC Racing Team not caught up in a massive pile-up inside two kilometers to go. The crash occurred just after Danilo Wyss put Kristoff in position near the front. "Danilo did a great job before and over the climb at 2 km to go," Kristoff said. "But my legs were not super after the climb. I tried to go early to have a chance to win, but my legs were not good enough from 250 meters out."
