Santos Tour Down Under, Stage 3: Keeping The Pace High

20. January 2011

Stirling, Australia

The BMC Racing Team continued to show its aggression Thursday at the Santos Tour Down by ratcheting up the pace when a group of four went off the front early in Stage 3.

Kohler And Roe's Pursuit

With less than 50 kilometers of the 129 km race to go, Martin Kohler and Tim Roe of the BMC Racing Team rode off the front of the peloton, which trailed the break by five minutes. The pair – and a third rider –  closed to within 90 seconds before being reeled back by the pack. Roe said the counter move was not the original intention. "Today's objective was to make the race hard, so we attacked on Germantown Hill," Roe said. "It just so happened that we got a gap." Said Kohler: "We wanted to ride faster on the climb and get the pack a little bit in trouble. But we were maybe going a bit too hard, so the pack let us go." The peloton eventually brought everything back and Michael Matthews (Rabobank) won a field sprint. Alessandro Ballan is the BMC Racing Team's highest-placed rider overall in ninth after finishing 11th on the stage.
