Santambrogio Sixth At Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian

14. August 2012

BMC Racing Team's Mauro Santambrogio matched his best finish of the season Tuesday with sixth place in Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian.

Van Avermaet Also In Top 15
Santambrogio and teammate Greg Van Avermaet were part of a group chasing solo winner Luis Leon Sanchez (Rabobank Cycling Team). Sanchez won for the second time in three years by attacking as the pack regrouped over the final climb about 10 kilometers from the end of the 234 km race. Santambrogio's finish equaled his previous season-best result, a sixth place at GP Lugano in February. "My goal was to ride beside Greg, so I tried to ride as close to him as I could," Santambrogio said. "My placing is a good sign that my training was efficient and gives me confidence for the Vuelta a España." Van Avermaet, who was third here a year ago, placed 13th. "We did have four riders in the first group but Marco Pinotti and Amaël Moinard were dropped on the last climb," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said. "I was expecting that Santambrogio would do the sprint for Greg, but it was not so easy in the final, so Mauro did his own sprint."
