Giro d'Italia, Stage 7: Pinotti Moves Up

12. May 2012

BMC Racing Team's Marco Pinotti continued his climb up the overall standings at the Giro d'Italia Saturday, moving from 14th to 11th overall after the race's first mountain-top finish.

Tschopp Team-Best 26th Place
Paolo Tiralongo (Astana Pro Team) edged defending Giro winner Michele Scarponi in a two-up sprint at the end of the 205 kilometer race. BMC Racing Team's Johann Tschopp finished 26th, 11 seconds behind Tiralongo, and Pinotti rolled across the line another 14 seconds later as Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda) became the new race leader. Pinotti said the Category 2 climb to the finish didn't exactly suit him. "I tried to defend myself in the last kilometer," he said. "I knew it was a tough kind of finish. For me, I tried not to be too much in the back and then have to close the gap." With two weeks to go, Pinotti said he's encouraged by what remains ahead. "I feel confident, but I know the last week will be a decisive one because then it will be a matter of minutes and not seconds," the five-time Italian national time trial champion said.
