Gilbert Ninth At World Road Championships

29. September 2013

Philippe Gilbert (BEL), in ninth place, was the BMC Racing Team's best finisher Sunday at the UCI world road championships.

Rainy Conditions
Gilbert was unable to keep pace when the decisive attack was made on the last of 10 trips up the longer of two climbs on the 16.5-kilometer circuit of the 272.2-km race. The defending champion finished ninth, 34 seconds after Rui Costa (POR) out-sprinted Joaquin Rodriguez (ESP) for the victory. Alejandro Valverde (ESP) finished third. Several BMC Racing Team riders – including Cadel Evans (AUS), Ivan Santaromita (ITA) and Tejay van Garderen (USA) – were the victims of crashes as steady rain fell for all but the final hour of the seven-hour race. Other finishers for the BMC Racing Team were: Greg Van Avermaet (BEL), 23rd at 1:26, Marcus Burghardt (GER) 39th at 3:40, Danilo Wyss (SUI) 53rd at 11:20 and Amaël Moinard (FRA) 56th at 11:20. Only 61 riders of more than 200 starters finished the race.
