Cummings Best For BMC Racing Team At Roma Maxima

3. March 2013

Steve Cummings was the BMC Racing Team's best finisher Sunday in Roma Maxima, a new edition of a former Italian semi-classic.

Demanding Course
The peloton chased hard – but never caught – Blel Kadri (Ag2r-La Mondiale), the last rider from a small breakaway that escaped in the first half of the 180-kilometer race. Kadri soloed in 37 seconds ahead of the bunch sprint, which included Cummings in 29th. The Vuelta a España stage winner said he wanted to be a part of the initial escape. "The breakaway took a long time to go and I tried a few times to get in it without success," he said. "I thought Lampre would catch the break so I could try a late attack, but when you're alone in a group of 50 riders, there is nothing to do. The speed was too high to attack alone and I didn't make a good sprint." The race started and finished in the shadow of the Roman Coliseum, as did previous editions of the race, known as the Giro del Lazio. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said the demanding course took its toll. "Steve really had good legs considering how hard he raced on Saturday at Strade Biache," Sciandri said.
