BMC Racing Team Finishes Six In Madrid

11. September 2011

Madrid, Spain

Six of the BMC Racing Team's nine starters of the Vuelta a España reached the finish in Madrid Sunday, with Greg Van Avermaet completing the three-week race in the team's best position (83rd overall).

'Really Hard Vuelta'

Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) won the final stage and Juan José Cobo (Geox-TMC) held on to take the overall title by 13 seconds over Christopher Froome (Sky Pro Cycling). BMC Racing Team's Mathias Frank, who finished the second Grand Tour of his career, said he was happy to see the finish line. "The Giro d'Italia was a hard race and after a good Tour de Suisse maybe I was a bit tired here," he said. "But it was a good experience for the future. It didn't quite come out as well as I wanted it to, but I'm happy to make it to Madrid." Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe noted the race was more challenging than recent editions. "It was a really hard Vuelta, with a lot of mountain stages and also stages that weren't really mountainous but still difficult," he said.
