teammachine the new SLR01 race

The requirements for the teammachine were defined by WorldTour racing. Riders like Philippe Gilbert, Cadel Evans and Tejay van Garderen asked for a bike that combines lightweight, for the long climbs, with the very best acceleration for aggressive attacks. We listened to their needs, and suggestions, and then dug deep into our bag of engineering tricks to bring the new SLR01's performance to a whole new level. With our new ACE technology, we accelerated the normal design and engineering process by running an incredible 34'000 computer-generated prototypes. The end result is the new teammachine SLR01 offering what we like to call, "acceleration redefined."

ACE technology: As far as it goes. For Charles Darwin, all life adheres to an evolutionary process. According to this principle, it took several thousand years for humans to morph from ape-like creatures into the advanced beings we are today. Similarly, by looking back one hundred or so years, anyone can see where bike design originated, and to where it has evolved: from simple lugged steel construction, to fantastically complicated monocoque carbon fiber creations. At BMC we decided to try and speed up the process, and replaced the “hand of God” with highly sophisticated computerized design optimization. First, we started by defining the performance criteria of a world-class road bike frame, and by stating such open parameters of frame design as tube cross-sections, tube placement, and carbon fiber lay-up. From there we established a calculation model capable of computing through finite element method (FEM) the bike frame’s real-world performance based on our established parameters. The last step of the process was to use an algorithm to run tens of thousands of reiterative design calculations to identify ideal frame characteristics. This process is neither cheap, nor extremely fast, but in the end we ran over 34 thousand design iterations over the course of one full year of engineering! As the first prototypes appeared, designed according to FEM results, we were surprised how closely we had come to achieving our goals. And our professional athletes were almost instantly convinced and satisfied. In the end, we needed fewer prototypes than usual to confirm the final product.

Lightweight: It's the lightest bike we make: the frame weighs a feathery 790 grams and makes for a 1390 gram frameset. It is nearly 200 grams lighter and 25% stiffer than the 2013 teammachine SLR01. It is rigid enough for stomping to victory in mountain stages, pulling away while climbing steep grades, and tracking perfectly on slashing descents. By sticking to our proven geometry, the SLR01 is agile enough to flick through the tightest corners, and fit the most aggressively positioned riders in the peloton.

Comfortable: Believe it or not, Cadel Evan’s main requirement for a race bike is comfort. He needs to ride long hours every day without being sapped of his energy, and arrive as fresh as possible at the finish line. We solve this need with our Tuned Compliance Concept (TCC) by combining stiffness in laterally flexing directions, and compliance in vertical directions. Specifically, carbon-fiber lay-up and tube shapes are optimized so that the bike can resist rider-actuated forces, while at the same time giving in to road forces.

When we set out to create the new teammachine SLR01 we knew we had an enormous hurdle ahead of us. The previous generation's SLR01 was largely regarded as one of, if not the most well-balanced pro peloton frameset with...
