Volta a Catalunya, Stage 5: Wyss In Top 10 Again

22. maart 2013

Danilo Wyss sprinted to his third top 10 result for the BMC Racing Team Friday at the Volta a Catalunya with fifth place in the bunch sprint that ended the 156.5 kilometer stage.

Near-Disaster In The Corner
Wyss, fifth on Stage 1 and ninth on Stage 2, said he knew he had to be in the first five riders to round the final turn about 400 meters from the finish line. "But I was a bit more like seventh or eighth position and went into the turn really fast, so my bike started sliding on the turn. I was really on the limit," he said. "Tomorrow there is a climb at the end so we'll see how the race goes – if we arrive with a breakaway or a sprint. For sure, if there is an opportunity, I will take it." François Parisien (Argos-Shimano) took the victory as Daniel Martin (Garmin-Sharp) kept the overall lead. Wyss wasn't the only BMC Racing Team rider to make a bid for the win Friday. Marcus Burghardt first lifted the tempo at the front when a two-man breakaway was caught with 15 km to go. Then, inside the final three kilometers, the past Tour de France stage winner went clear but was reeled in just before the field passed beneath the red, one-kilometer-to-go flag. "His attack didn't really work, but it stretched it out enough that Danilo still had a good wheel," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said.
