Van Avermaet 12th at Lombardia

15. October 2011

Lecco, Italy

Greg Van Avermaet finished 12th and Ivan Santaromita was 21st Saturday at the Giro di Lombardia as the BMC Racing Team completed its 2011 season.

Display of Teamwork

Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said the entire BMC Racing Team rode valiantly in support of Van Avermaet, who had a harrowing moment when his tire went flat on the descent after the Colma di Sormano, about 170 kilometers into the 241 km race. "I was lucky I didn't crash," Van Avermaet said. "Steve (Morabito) gave me his wheel and the guys helped me chase back to the front." Baldato said it was fitting to see teamwork that was so evident throughout the season in action to the end, particularly on the first two major climbs. "The guys' job was to get Greg to the last climb and they did a great job," Baldato said. Oliver Zaugg (Leopard Trek) soloed to the win as Van Avermaet and Santaromita's group arrived 27 seconds later.
