Greg Van Avermaet of the BMC Racing Team attacked with another rider Friday early on the final stage of the Tour of Qatar and the pair stayed away until the final six kilometers.

Van Avermaet and Gediminas Bagdonas (An Post) led by six minutes at one point in the 126 km race. "I had a strong rider with me and we worked well together," Van Avermaet said. "I never had the feeling we could stay away and I also broke a spoke 30 km from the end, so that didn't help." BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said: "Our objective was to put somebody in the early break to be sure that Gert Steegmans was not doing the intermediate sprints and taking time bonuses to pass Marcus Burghardt in the G.C." Burghardt finished ninth overall behind winner Mark Renshaw (HTC-Highroad).
