Tour of Qatar, Stage 1: Burghardt in the Breakaway

Al Khor Corniche, Qatar

BMC Racing Team's Marcus Burghardt made the decisive split of 18 on a wind-whipped opening road stage of the Tour of Qatar Monday.

Chaos From Kilometer Zero

Burghardt, fifth overall here last year, finished 11th as Tom Boonen (Quick Step) took the stage and the overall lead. "It was a really hard stage because we were always riding fast – averaging nearly 48 kilometers/hour," Burghardt said. "I'm a bit sad that I didn't ride a better prologue yesterday." BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said Burghardt did a good job of finding good position as the race blew apart. "It was a real crazy start, as expected, with a side wind from kilometer zero that immediately broke the race into six parts," Lelangue said. "Tomorrow, I think we will have the same kind of stage."
