Tour of Oman, Stage 1: Spectators Make Sprint Go Awry

15. February 2011

Al Seeb, Oman

What looked to be a strong leadout for the BMC Racing Team's sprint went sideways 500 meters from the finish Tuesday when spectators crept into the road at the Tour of Oman.

Phinney's First Race

John Murphy, who finished 12th, was sprinting with teammates Alexander Kristoff and Taylor Phinney. "But with 500 meters to go, we got blocked by some spectators on the right side when we tried to open the sprint," Murphy said. Taylor Phinney finished 16th in his first race for the BMC Racing Team. "It was extremely fun getting into the mix of things with my new teammates," Phinney said. "We rode together all day, and were in good position for the sprint (until the end). We will have more chances to come, of course, and we have to be happy with the way we rode as a team." Théo Bos (Rabobank) took the win.
