Tour of California, Stage 5: Bookwalter Crashes

20. May 2011

Paso Robles, California

On a day that saw Jeff Louder in the breakaway and Taylor Phinney finish eighth, it was a crash by Brent Bookwalter that made the biggest news for the BMC Racing Team at the Amgen Tour of Caliornia.

Bookwalter Loses Time
BMC Racing Team Dr. Eric Heiden said Brent Bookwalter has scrapes on his left elbow, hip and lower leg after going down inside the last seven kilometers. "A guy reached back to hand sling his teammate," Bookwalter said, "and when he reached back, he smashed into me and put his wheel into my wheel and I went down hard on my left side." Louder quickly gave Bookwalter his BMC, but Bookwalter still lost 47 seconds and fell from 13th to 16th in the overall standings. Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Doimo) won the race and Chris Horner (Team RadioShack) kept the overall lead. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Michael Sayers said all is not lost. "We still have three guys in the front, so the team GC is OK. Steve Morabito (13th, 2:38) is still up there, so we have a GC guy. And Amaël (Moinard) and George (Hincapie) are up there."
