Tour of Beijing, Stage 1: Murphy Top 15

5. oktober 2011

Beijing, China

John Murphy was the BMC Racing Team's best-placed rider in the individual time trial that opened the inaugural edition of the Tour of Beijing Wednesday. The former U.S. national criterium champion finished 13th in the 11.3-kilometer race against the clock.

Used Standard Road Bikes

Murphy said he was surprised to only be 47 seconds off the winning time of world time trial champion Tony Martin (HTC-Highroad). "I didn't know how good today would be because I've been coughing a bit this week," Murphy said. "But not having time trial bikes played to my advantage against the real time trial specialists." Murphy said there were some technical turns on the Olympic campus course adjacent to the Bird's Nest stadium, but his BMC teammachine SLR01 handled just fine. "I tried to save what I could in the first half, knowing the last 5 km were into a headwind," he said. "I honestly thought I'd gone too hard at the start because I was dragging at the end. But I'm happy with a top 15, especially in a World Tour race."
