Tour of Austria, Stage 4: Morabito Seventh On Queen Stage

4. juli 2012

Steve Morabito rode to a seventh-place finish Wednesday, but the BMC Racing Team rider slipped a spot on the overall classification – to third – after Jakob Fuglsang (RadioShack-Nissan) soloed to the stage win and the race lead.

No Help With The Chase
Morabito and teammates Marco Pinotti and Ivan Santaromita were part of a group of more than 25 riders that left the peloton behind on the first of four climbs. When Fuglsang and Leopold König (Team NetApp) attacked the group on the biggest climb of the day – more than 100 kilometers from the finish – former race leader Danilo Di Luca and his Acqua & Sapone team refused to chase. "Di Luca put the race on us and we rode two of our three guys (Pinotti and Santaromita) as long and as hard as we could while Fuglsang kept the gap," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Michael Sayers said. Fuglsang won by 1:14 over König. Di Luca and Morabito both conceded 2:47, leaving Di Luca 1:12 back in second place and Morabito at 1:21. Morabito said he was feeling strong, but was disappointed the rest of his group chose not to chase. "I wanted to ride, but if I did, I would have dropped my teammates," he said. "It was better to ride with Marco the last 20 kilometers and save my energy until the end." Pinotti finished 19th and stands 13th overall, 3:34 behind.
