Tour of Austria, Stage 2: Morabito Climbs Into Second

2. July 2012

BMC Racing Team's Steve Morabito climbed his way into second place overall at the Tour of Austria Monday with a runner-up finish to Danilo Di Luca (Acqua & Sapone) on the challenging climb of the Kitzbüheler Horn mountain.

Team Effort
Morabito said it was important for him to show he was on good form on the 7.8-kilometer ascent that averages 14 percent and includes pitches as steep as 22 percent. "I have to thank all my teammates – especially Danilo Wyss, Brent Bookwalter and Marco Pinotti – who did a good job to bring me in first position at the start of the climb," Morabito said. "When Di Luca attacked with Thomas Rohregger (RadioShack-Nissan), I couldn't follow. But when I saw Rohregger got dropped, I got into a constant rhythm to get back to him." Di Luca won by seven seconds as Morabito attacked Rohregger in the final 100 meters to record his best result of the season. Pinotti was ninth, 59 seconds back of Di Luca. In the overall standings, which include time bonuses, Morabito trails Di Luca by 11 seconds while Pinotti is ninth at 1:09. "Marco rode really well too," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Michael Sayers said. "The entire team did a perfect job today. I think we're set very well for the rest of the week."
