Tour de France, Stage 4: Protecting Evans

7. July 2010

Reims, France

Keeping world champion Cadel Evans out of trouble and protecting his third place overall was the objective of the BMC Racing Team Wednesday at the Tour de France.

'Stress-Free Day'
Evans finished 16th on the day, guided to the finish by Brent Bookwalter, who was 13th. "I slotted in with Cadel with about 5 km to go and tried to keep him out of the wind and give him a wheel he could trust," Bookwalter said. "Then I made a push at the line since a few guys opened a gap in front of him and we don't want him to lose any seconds." Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre-Farnese) won the stage.

Roundabouts A Concern
BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said a number of roundabouts in the final kilometers were cause for concern. "We didn't want to take any risks with Cadel," Lelangue said. "Therefore we used George Hincapie, Marcus Burghardt and Alessandro Ballan to help him. The main focus today was recovery and taking it easy so that we can recharge the batteries for the next stages and when we hit the mountains."
