Paris-Nice, Stage 1: Van Garderen Fourth

4. March 2012

Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, France

BMC Racing Team's Tejay van Garderen earned Best Young Rider honors for his fourth-place performance in the opening stage time trial Sunday at Paris-Nice.

Slick Conditions

Piloting his BMC timemachine TM01 along the 9.4-kilometer course, van Garderen was the 17th-to-last rider to start and one of the first to endure falling rain that made for some hazardous conditions. "I was motivated at the start but I was a little bit nervous in the corners not really knowing how much speed I could take," van Garderen said. "I'm happy with how I felt but wish I could have started a little earlier. In a time trial like this, weather conditions can change, so it's basically the luck of the draw." Gustav Larsson (Vacansoleil-DCM) won in a time of 11:19, nine seconds faster than van Garderen. BMC Racing Team's Thor Hushovd (14th) and Taylor Phinney (18th) were also in the top 20.
