Pais Vasco, Stage 4: Mountain-Top Finish

5. April 2012

Ivan Santaromita was the BMC Racing Team's best-placed finisher on Thursday's mountain-top finish, 1:33 back of Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha), who soloed to win the stage and take the overall lead.

Positioning Important
Santaromita finished 39th in the 151-kilometer race that included five categorized climbs. Teammate Marco Pinotti came through 26 seconds later to put the pair 33rd and 35th, respectively, on the general classification with two days remaining. "Santaromita told me he just positioned himself poorly as the climb started," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said. "He was actually riding pretty well but sometimes it's all about positioning." BMC Racing Team's Tim Roe, who crashed Wednesday, withdrew from the race in the first hour. Race officials instructed him to retire for riding within the race's car caravan for too long, Sciandri said.
