Pais Vasco, Stage 2: Santambrogio Into 10th

3. april 2012

The BMC Racing Team endured cool and rainy conditions Tuesday at Pais Vasco as Mauro Santambrogio registered his second straight top 15 stage finish and moved into 10th place overall.

'It Was Crazy'
For nearly the entirety of the 165.7 kilometer stage, the peloton allowed five riders to dangle as many as seven minutes in front. When they were finally caught inside the final 20 km, speeds ramped up and what had been a "miserable day" also became dangerous, BMC Racing Team's Tim Roe said. "It was a pretty sketchy run-in to the finish," he said. "We came off the last descent and there were only three or four kilometers to go, but there were lots of roundabouts. It was crazy." Daryl Impey (GreenEDGE Cycling Team) got a small gap in the final kilometer and narrowly held off the charging pack to take the stage win while Santambrogio finished 12th. José Rojas (Movistar Team) kept the overall lead heading into the race's first summit finish after six other categorized climbs. "The most important thing today was to get to tomorrow safe and then see what we do on the climb," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said. "The guys did a good job of protecting Marco Pinotti and Amaël Moinard – our two guys for the general classification."
