Kristoff Seventh At Koolskamp

16. September 2011

Koolskamp, Belgium

Michael Schär was in the breakaway and Alexander Kristoff finished seventh for the BMC Racing Team Friday in the 96th edition of Kampioenschap Van Vlaanderen on a sunny, warm day in Koolskamp, Belgium.

On The Offensive

Despite a fast start to the 196.8 kilometer race, Schär's breakaway group that originally numbered three eventually grew to 10. After gaining a maximum lead of three minutes, the move was brought back with 40 km left, setting up an offensive tactic by the BMC Racing Team on the penultimate lap of 16 on the 12.3 km circuit. "There was a part of the circuit with a crosswind so we put all the guys on the front to make an echelon, which exploded the bunch and got it down to 60 or 70 riders,"  BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said. Kristoff, who registered his 12th top 10 finish, said he wasn't feeling 100 percent. "Simon (Zahner) did a fantastic effort to bring me into good position, but today it was my legs that were the problem in the sprint," he said.
