Giro d'Italia, Stage 4: In Memorium

10. May 2011

Livorno, Italy

The BMC Racing Team honored the memory of Wouter Weylandt Tuesday by riding in procession during the 208-kilometer neutralized stage of the Giro d'Italia.

Difficult Day

Weylandt died following a crash Monday. His LEOPARD TREK team crossed the finish line together, along with Weylandt's friend and training partner, Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Cervélo). Speaking on behalf of the BMC Racing Team, Danilo Wyss said it was a difficult day. "Even for the guys who didn't know Wouter really well, we are still a big family," Wyss said. "It's really hard to lose a guy like him, especially knowing his partner is expecting a child. It was a great gesture that we did the processional today out of respect for Wouter and his family."
