Giro del Trentino, Stage 3: Brutal Climb

19. april 2012

A tortuous climb to the finish Thursday at the Giro del Trentino took its toll as BMC Racing Team's Mathias Frank conceded the overall lead when he could not stay close to solo stage winner Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago-CSF).

Pinotti Lends Assistance
With help from teammate Marco Pinotti, Frank was able to limit his losses after Pozzovivo made his winning move at the end of the 167.8-kilometer race on the slopes of a climb featuring a 17 percent grade. "That was really great what he (Marco) did," Frank said. "I was over-pacing a little bit at the beginning and tried to hold onto the first guys and it was a bit too hard. Marco passed me one kilometer from the top and stayed with me, helping me on the flat parts to do a good rhythm." With one stage to go, Frank is fifth overall, 1:42 behind new leader Pozzovivo. Pinotti is ninth, 1:51 behind. Friday's race is expected to be equally as decisive, featuring more than 50 km of uphill leading to a mountain-top finish. "The climb tomorrow should be much better for me," Frank said. "Today, it was so steep and hard to ride against guys who only weigh 50 kilos. They go up much easier. I'll try my best. For sure, if I can stay in the top five, it's a really good result."
