Critérium du Dauphiné, Stage 5: The Great Escape

8. juni 2012

Cadel Evans and teammates George Hincapie, Michael Schär and Tejay van Garderen threw a scare into race leader Bradley Wiggins at the Critérium du Dauphiné Friday when the four BMC Racing Team riders forced the pace off the descent of the day's biggest climb.

'Opportunity Presented Itself'
Over the top of the Grand Colombier, which will be climbed at the Tour de France for the first time next month, the four were part of a group of 12 who were chasing an earlier breakaway. With Hincapie, Schär and van Garderen doing most of the work, they rapidly gained nearly a minute on Wiggins. "The move in the downhill was not planned, but it was a beautiful opportunity," BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said. "We wanted to be in front for that descent to avoid problems. When we saw that some of the leaders were a little far behind, we tried our luck. It was a nice move, even if it was a bit far from the finish." Though Evans's group was eventually brought back by the chasing efforts of Wiggins' Team Sky, the defending Tour de France champion did move up one spot in the overall standings as Arthur Vichot (FDJ-BigMat) soloed to the stage win. Evans said it was good to see his teammates help him go on the offensive, perhaps setting the stage for another offensive in Saturday's 167.5 km stage that includes six categorized climbs. "Sometimes you have to take those opportunities when they come your way," he said. "In the end, it was reasonably successful because it moved me up one place on GC and it has the possibility of helping me at least get on the podium in the future."
