Crash Ends Ballan's Tour de Pologne

Dąbrowa Górnicza, Poland

A crash late in Monday's second stage of the Tour de Pologne knocked BMC Racing Team's Alessandro Ballan out of the race and prevented teammate Alexander Kristoff from contesting the sprint finish.

Swerve Causes Crash

Ballan, fifth overall at the Tour de Pologne a year ago and the 2009 champion, went down in a high-speed pile-up about three kilometers from the end of the 162 kilometer race won by race leader Marcel Kittel (Skil-Shimano). BMC Racing Team's Danilo Wyss was following the wheel of the peloton's leading rider, who inexplicably swerved. "It was slightly downhill, so it was very fast," Wyss said. "He went right and I had to go right as well. Alexander touched my wheel and crashed." Ballan also went down hard, landing on his left knee. An X-ray reveals no breakage, though, BMC Racing Team Dr. Scott Major said. "Alessandro has a deep abrasion and how soon he can come back depends on how well it will close," Dr. Major said. Kristoff, second overall heading into the stage, has a lot of road rash, but will continue.
