21. May 2010

Bakersfield, California

Steve Morabito finished 12th on Stage 5 while two other BMC Racing Team riders were involved in a crash that knocked five riders out of the Amgen Tour of California Thursday.

Zahner, Beyer Not Hurt Seriously

The pileup occurred only five kilometers into the race and brought down BMC Racing Team riders Simon Zahner and Chad Beyer. "I was the third guy to go down and then pretty much everyone else rode into us," Zahner said. Morabito is 15th overall, 31 seconds behind new leader Michael Rogers (HTC-Columbia). "It was nice to have George (Hincapie) and Chris (Butler) with me near the end today," Morabito said. Friday's stage is the first mountain-top finish in the race's five-year history. The 217-kilometer stage features seven categorized climbs on the way to Big Bear Lake ski resort.
