Tour of Oman, Stage 1: Phinney Sixth

11. February 2013

BMC Racing Team's Taylor Phinney registered his third top 10 result of the season Monday with sixth place in the bunch sprint finish on the opening stage of the Tour of Oman.

Learning More Each Time
Phinney said the race was relatively calm as the peloton let Bobbie Traksel (Champion System) and Kohei Uchima (Japanese National Team) build up a nine-minute lead before catching them with less than 20 kilometers to go. Marcel Kittel (Team Argos-Shimano) took the win ahead of Davide Appollonio (AG2R La Mondiale). Phinney, third overall at the Tour of Qatar last week and the race's best young rider, said he is learning more each time he contests a sprint. "I am able to stay more calm and collected when it gets hectic," he said. "That's something I didn't have last year, so that's a good sign. Michi (Michael Schär) and Greg (Van Avermaet) did a good job of protecting me before the big train took over."

Smooth Start For Evans
BMC Racing Team's Cadel Evans said his first race of the season was a smooth one. "After you're away from racing, you start to miss it," the 2011 Tour de France winner said. "As I'd hoped, it was a nice re-introduction to racing – not too intensive and good weather. It was relatively calm with a bit of a tricky final, a little bit dangerous with the wind. But we all managed to stay safe." Evans said his primary objective for the six-day race is to get his legs up to race speed. "From there, maybe I'll have an opportunity to have a little try on the (Stage 4) hilltop finish," he said. "I'm not going to put any big expectations on myself. Of course, any race I always try; what place it's for, we'll see."
