Surprising Bronze Medal for Taramarcaz

9. June 2013

Estavayer-le-Lac. BMC Mountainbike Racing Team's Julien Taramarcaz has won a bronze medal at the Swiss Marathon Championships in Estevayer le Lac. His teammate Jeremy Huguenin finished the race in a strong fifth position.

The Swiss Championships, which were held as part of the Elsa Bike Trophy (60 km), took an unexpected turn. Hans Ueli Stauffer broke away on the first climb but nobody took his escape terribly seriously. A six-man chase group, including the two BMC riders, followed the breakaway. Then race favorite and defending champion Christoph Sauser decimated this group by increasing his pace. Wheras Jérémy Hugenin suffered an energy slump after nearby 20 kilometers, Julien Taramarcaz was still able to follow, even when Sauser attacked again some 20 kilometers from the finish. While Konny Looser (SUI) dropped behind, Swiss Cyclo-cross Champion Taramarcaz still hung on Sauser's rear wheel.

„When Sauser attacked once again some twelve kilometers from the finish, I was right on the limit and I decided to ride my own pace", explained Taramarcaz. This proved to be the right decision because he was able to defend the bronze rank against Urs Huber (SUI) who came charging up behind him. „I did not expect to win a medal", said Taramarcaz who was very pleased with his success in this unfamiliar discipline.

Sauser succeeded in catching Stauffer a few hundred meters before the finish line and became Swiss champion.
Huguenin recovered again and had a very convincing finish in fifth place. "I knew it would be tough. After 25 km, the energy came back. It's my first marathon year and I still have a bit to learn," said Huguenin.
