BMC Racing Cup, 4th round in Gränichen

BMC Racing team celebrated a double victory at Gränichen's gravel plant in front of an atmospheric backdrop of spectators.
Lukas Flückiger was able to confirm the powerful fitness level that he has shown in recent weeks and celebrated his first win of the season. The Swiss rider prevailed just a second ahead of his teammate Julien Absalon of France. Matthias Stirnemann was fifth in his home race.

On the technically demanding 4.55-kilometer course, Flückiger took command right from the very first lap onwards. In the second lap he already had a lead of 15 seconds on a chasing group. Apparently, Flückiger had well „digested" his intermezzo at the GP Aargau road race on Thursday.

Using clever tactics, Julien Absalon let his teammate pull away from the field. But when Absalon noticed that Fabian Giger was slowing down a bit in the chasing group, he attacked immediately. He caught up with Lukas Flückiger in the third out of eight laps.

They both agreed on doing teamwork and thus succeeded in increasing the lead to one minute.

"Julien had noticed that in some passages I was a little stronger than him. Of course, I am familiar with the race course, and in this case it is an advantage. So we agreed to work together until the final lap, also to save some energy. Then, in the final lap, we both fought for victory," explained Lukas Flückiger happily: "For me this victory confirms that I have been able to keep the form that I had at the World Cup races."

Julien Absalon called the race a "tactically perfect race", and he hopes for a similar cooperation at the World Cup in Val di Sole (ITA) next Saturday. "Then perhaps with a reverse result," laughed the Frenchman.

In the chasing group Matthias Stirnemann (Gränichen) surprised his home crowd by fighting for a place on the podium. He defended fifth place and showed himself deeply moved on the podium. "The audience was a huge motivation for me, I am overwhelmed. During the week I had already noticed that things are getting better and, of course, I know this race course by heart," said Stirnemann. He won the U23 competition ahead of of his teammate Reto Indergand.
