Press release

BMC Switzerland starts 2013 with a high-calibre mountainbike racing team

The BMC Mountainbike Racing Team starts the 2013 season with a top team. Multiple Olympic Champion, World Champion and World Cup winner Julien Absalon is joined on the team by current Eliminator World Champion Ralph Näf and 2012 Cross-Country Vice World Champion Lukas Flückiger. The current European Cross Country Champion has also extended his contract. The team is being augmented with talented new riders, and riders are now also being put forward for the rapidly growing Endurance sector. In the research centre at BMC's headquarters in Grenchen, engineers and experienced athletes work together to develop and test the latest technologies and bicycles for the group's BMC, Bergamont and Stromer brands.

Bicycle manufacturer BMC's commitment is geared towards the long term and is secured until 2015. Following on from the road team's successes, the BMC MTB Racing Team is now also an R&D team in the truest sense of the word. The BMC team's work will not be limited just to mountainbike racing, but also involve universities, development laboratories and carbon fibre manufacturers. The athletes' experience is integrated directly into research and development. For some BMC race riders, this represents development prospects that extend way beyond their active career. Just like with the Road Team, BMC is keen to make more use of cross-over synergies in order to optimise the choice of materials and process technologies. Long-term development cooperation agreements established with component manufacturers Shimano, 3T and Fox will help to safeguard this in the future too.

BMC MTB 2012 Racing Team features top names and young peak performers

The addition of Julien Absalon, 2-times Olympic Champion, 7-times World Champion and 5-times World Cup winner, has already been announced. Other newcomers to the team include the Swiss Ralph Näf, 2012 Eliminator World Champion and 2010 European Marathon Champion, as well as Lukas Flückiger, who came second in the XC World Championships in 2012. Under the management of David Chassot and coaching expertise of Alex Moos, other world-class riders will be lining up at the start alongside the current European XC Champion Moritz Milatz, who already rides in BMC colours.

BMC focuses on newcomers as well as top athletes: the team is being boosted by the international top U23 riders such as the Reto Intergand from Switzerland and Stephen Ettinger from the USA, who are joined by U23 Cross Country (XC) Champion Matthias Stirnemann from Switzerland.

The two Swiss-born athletes Martin Fanger and marathon specialist Jérémy Huguenin will be lending their might to the team with which Julien Taramarcaz is looking to defend his title of Swiss Champion in Cyclo-Cross.

The Swiss team leaders at BMC will be taking part in almost the full bandwidth of mountainbike racing in 2013. It is not just in cross country, marathon and cyclo-cross that the BMC Mountainbike Racing Team is represented by first-class athletes: Endurance athletes François Bailly-Maître, from France, two-times winner of the Transvésubienne, and Florian Golay, from Switzerland, will be representing the BMW trail crew on the team, which will on occasions be joined by Ralph Näf.

BMC Group CEO Thomas Binggeli sums up the idea of in future joining the MTB Racing Team with the research and development department: "I believe that there will be tremendous potential for both sides. With information from the race track, we'll be translating the progress directly into our development processes. Our engineers will have constant access to race riders to check the individual stages of development on an ongoing basis on the trails."
