Volta a Catalunya, Stage 4: Frank On The Front

24. March 2011

El Vendrell, Spain

Mathias Frank starred in a long breakaway for the BMC Racing Team Thursday at the Volta a Catalunya while Cadel Evans emerged unscathed from a crash.

Not Much Freedom

Frank and four others escaped after 80 of the 195 kilometers. "We had a pretty hard headwind, so the peloton would never give us more than a three-and-a-half minutes," Frank said. His break was eventually caught and Manuel Cardoso (RadioShack) won a bunch sprint. The crash that forced Evans to switch BMCs occurred in the first 35 km. "It happened right in front of me but I didn't go down, so it was no problem," Evans said. With three days left, Evans is ninth overall, 50 seconds behind race leader Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank). "Our No. 1 goal is to keep Cadel positioned and defend his place on GC," Frank said.
