Tour of the Basque Country: Jersey Battle

7. April 2011

Eibar, Spain

Amaël Moinard fought unsuccessfully Thursday to keep the King of the Mountains jersey for the BMC Racing Team at the Tour of the Basque Country.

Try Again Friday

With a three-man breakaway away for much of the 179-kilometer race that included seven climbs, Moinard was unable to score points to keep his lead in the special classification. "I saved my legs today to do my best tomorrow because it will be hard in the beginning," Moinard said. Samuel Sánchez won the race to the top of the final climb while BMC Racing Team's Ivan Santaromita finished 21st and is 25th overall. "There were only 45 guys left at the start of the last climb and we had Ivan and Tim (Roe), so they did well," BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said. Joaquim Rodríguez (Katusha) still leads.
