Tour of Oman, Stage 6: Crash Costs Van Avermaet

20. February 2011

Mattrah Seafront, Oman

Greg Van Avermaet of the BMC Racing Team crashed in the last five kilometers of Sunday's stage of the Tour Oman and dropped from 10th to 24th in the final standings.

Burghardt In Long Breakaway

"It's really a disappointment to lose my place," Van Avermaet said. "Some guy just went too fast to the right and before I knew it, I was on the ground. I have some burns on my body, but no big problems." Teammate Marcus Burghardt spent more than 140 kilometers in a breakaway of five that was caught with 7 km to go. Robert Gesink (Rabobank) won the race overall as Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad) took the final stage.
