Tour of Beijing, Stage 3: Frank Finishes Ninth

11. October 2012

BMC Racing Team's Mathias Frank finished ninth Thursday on what was expected to be the hardest stage of this year's Tour of Beijing.

Climbing Up The Overall
Frank said having several teammates around him was helpful as he began the final climb to the finish at the Badaling Great Wall. "I had three or four guys still there in the last five kilometers so they helped me," he said. "I stayed out of trouble until the last climb but didn't have any the legs for the sprint." Finishing in the same time as stage winner Francesco Gavazzi (Astana Pro Team), Frank moved from 19th to 16th overall with two days to go. Teammates Steve Cummings (20th) and Klaas Lodewyck (22nd) also finished in the top 25. BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said despite not having a rider in a seven-man breakaway that was caught with 10 kilometers to go in the 162.5 km race, he was pleased with the teamwork. "Everyone was sitting in well and we put our guys around Mathias and tucked him in there to position him for the last climb," Sciandri said.
