Tour de Wallonie, Stage 1: Van Avermaet Fourth

23. July 2011

Banneux, Belgium

After figuring in a breakaway for a good part of the opening stage of the Tour de Wallonie Saturday, Greg Van Avermaet sprinted to fourth place for the BMC Racing Team.

Break Not A Good Combination

Seven kilometers into the 152-kilometer race, Van Avermaet went away with three others: Gregory Henderson (Sky Pro Cycling) Mirko Selvaggi (Vacansoleil) and Rudy Rouet (Wallonie-Bruxelles). Despite building a four-minute lead, the combination wasn't a good one, BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Rik Verbrugghe said, so he had Van Avermaet drop back and the BMC Racing Team helped with the chase. Mathieu Ladagnous (FDJ) took the stage win in a bunch sprint. "Tomorrow's final climb is really steep," Van Avermaet said. "I hope that I can take some seconds there and have a good GC at this race."
