Stefan Küng Wins Giro del Belvedere

1. April 2013

Stefan Küng earned the BMC Development Team's first victory in a one-day race when he out-sprinted two breakaway companions at the end of the 75th Giro del Belvedere Monday.

Küng was part of an early 12-man breakaway that shattered with two laps to go of a rolling loop around Villa di Villa in the 154-kilometer race. Eventual third-place finisher Mitchell Mulhern (Australian National Team) was solo over the top of the Montaner climb on the penultimate lap, but Küng fought back to rejoin him on the descent. Mulhern dropped Küng on the ascent the final time but runner-up Silvio Herklotz (Team Stölting) caught the two on the descent and the three arrived at the finish 30 seconds ahead of the chasing peloton.  Mulhern led out the sprint, but Küng came from behind to convincingly take the win. His victory was the BMC Development Team's second of the season, adding to an overall win by Silvan Dillier at the Tour de Normandie on March 24.
