Ronde van België, Stage 2: Gilbert's Escape

23. May 2013

BMC Racing Team's Philippe Gilbert saw his bid for victory Thursday end inside the final kilometer when the peloton chased the reigning world road champion and two others down on a rainy, cool day at Ronde van België.

Breakaway Not Cooperating
Gilbert attacked on the last climb of the 182.3-kilometer race and only Francesco Gavazzi (Astana Pro Team) and Niki Terpstra (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) could follow. With 11 km of flat and downhill riding to go, the trio led by 11 seconds. Their advantage peaked at 22 seconds with 4 km to go, but the efforts of Lotto Belisol and Team Europcar brought them back inside 800 meters. Gilbert said he was frustrated that not everyone in the escape was working. "I don't understand why he (Terpsta) didn't want to ride," Gilbert said. "Gavazzi and I had a good understanding. I don't understand, because when you are with three in the front and attack, you want to win. I don't want to criticize their tactics, but I don't understand." André Greipel (Lotto Belisol Team) won his second straight stage to keep the overall lead while Greg Van Avermaet (17th) was the BMC Racing Team's top finisher. Assistant Director Yvon Ledanois said he was pleased to see four riders from the BMC Racing Team make the front group when the race split with 30 km to go "We had Manuel Quinziato, Marcus Burghardt, Philippe and Greg in the final and I told Philippe and Greg if there is a chance, they should try something," Ledanois said. "I don't understand why the (escape group) didn't ride with three together. I respect Terpstra's decision. But when you are in the front you want to win. Otherwise you don't attack."
