Giro d'Italia, Stage 17: Johann Tschopp 10th

23. May 2012

Johann Tschopp continued his climb up the overall standings of the Giro d'Italia by finishing with the second group on Wednesday's stage through the Dolomite mountains. The BMC Racing Team rider's 10th place moved him from 14th to 11th overall with four stages to go.

Hopes To Keep Moving Up
On the 186 kilometer stage over four peaks, it was Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha Team) who solidified his overall lead by winning the stage in a five-up sprint. A group of eight Tschopp was riding in rolled across the line 82 seconds later. "It was a difficult stage, a lot of mountains and particularly, the last climb was really steep," Tschopp said. "I had the feeling that I was not on a really good day, but I dug deep to stay close to the favorites. I hope it's a good sign for the coming days. It was hard, but it's the same for everybody here." Last year, Tschopp finished his fifth Giro d'Italia in a career-best 15th place, which was also best on the BMC Racing Team. With two more mountain stages to come Friday and Saturday, the former Giro stage winner said he's hoping he can continue moving up the standings. "I got a little cold after the last few days in the rain, so I hope to stay in shape and follow my objective to be in the Top 10, day-by-day," he said.
