Evans Fifth On Final Stage At Trentino

19. April 2013

Cadel Evans of the BMC Racing Team finished eighth overall at the Giro del Trentino on the strength of a fifth-place result in Friday's final stage that finished atop the Sega di Ala climb.

Continues To Improve
An attack by Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team) with six kilometers to go in the 166.8-km race shattered a small, select group that included Evans. The 2011 Tour de France winner arrived at the finish 63 seconds after Nibali, who soloed to the stage win far enough ahead of previous race leader Maxime Bouet (AG2R-La Mondiale) to win the race overall. Evans said he rode the final climb at his own pace. "I'm just really going at my own rhythm and not watching the other guys," he said. "I'm improving and it's a long way to the end of the Giro (d'Italia) and a long way to the start of the Tour (de France) and it's even longer to Paris." BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Fabio Baldato said Evans's three teammates – Adam Blythe, Marco Pinotti and Stage 3 winner Ivan Santaromita – were all instrumental in helping Evans climb into the top 10 on the last day. "This is good for Cadel's morale and for sure he can improve in the next two weeks as we approach the Giro," Baldato said. "Today's final climb was real climb and really hard – 13 km with a steep part of 15 to 20 percent. So he did a great performance."
