BMC Racing Team Opens Season With People's Choice Classic

19. January 2014

The BMC Racing Team formally began its 2014 campaign Sunday with the People's Choice Classic, the annual prelude criterium to the Santos Tour Down Under.

The Race:
50 kilometers (25 laps of a two-kilometer circuit) on Victoria Drive in North Adelaide.

The Day's Breakaway:
Axel Domont (AG2R La Mondiale), Nathan Haas (Garmin-Sharp), Anthony Roux (Equipe Cycliste FDJ.fr) and Wackermann (Lampre-Merida) slipped the pack after five laps and enjoyed more than 20 kilometers of freedom before Domont was the last to be swept up inside of 10 laps to go.

The Winning Move:
Marcel Kittel (Team Giant-Shimano) out-sprinted Andre Greipel (Lotto Belisol Team) after Greipel's Lotto Belisol team took control of the field from Team Sky with two laps to go. Greipel was bidding to win the race for the third straight year.

Best for the BMC Racing Team:
Ben Hermans (BEL) finished 36th, 19 seconds back.

What Cadel Evans Had To Say:
"The first race of the year is always a little bit nervous. But there was really nice ambiance and a sunset criterium. It's great ambiance and great to get the season started and the team in unison and get the team cohesion going."
