Belgian Races Good Preparation For Flanders

26. March 2010

Harelebeke, Belgium

Saturday’s E3 Prijs Vlaanderen-Harelbeke and Gent-Wevelgem provide the perfect final tests for the BMC Racing Team leading up to next weekend’s top Belgian Classic, the Tour of Flanders.

Riders on the BMC Racing Team have had success before in the Belgium semi-classic E3 Prijs Vlaanderen-Harelbeke. Last year, Marcus Burghardt was 10th while Alessandro Ballan finished second in 2006. Assistant Sport Director Michael Sayers said Burghardt is poised for a good result. “These races are becoming very important for him,” Sayers said. “And Alessandro will obviously play a major factor because this is one of several races leading up to Tour of Flanders – which is one of his primary goals.”

Two Former Champions Of Gent-Wevelgem
In Marcus Burghardt (winner in 2007 and seventh last year) and George Hincapie (winner in 2001, plus four other top five finishes), the BMC Racing Team has a pair of solid contenders in the race best known for its 16 short, but challenging climbs. BMC Racing Team Director Sportif John Lelangue said it will be important for the team to get a result in the 219 km race. “For us, that will be a good sign looking to the week ahead to the Tour of Flanders,” he said.
